Adriana working on a piece of marble.

I feel that only as an artist have I been able to express myself completely. My art has been influenced in two ways: First, growing up in the desertic area of northern Chile had a great impact on my early art work in clay. I became fascinated with primitive cultures and I realized that there was a common link in all of them: a love for the earth.

Second, my training as a scientist has influenced the forms and shapes that I have given to my sculpture pieces.

I have chosen marble as my medium, a very challenging, nonetheless very rewarding material. When I work in marble, sometimes I start with a very definite idea, done either in a drawing or a small maquette in clay. On other occasions, I just start to work on the marble without knowing where it will take me. I let the marble talk to me and guide me; this approach takes longer and for days I find myself lost until suddenly I feel at peace with the stone...... Giving life, movement and rhythm to a rough and cold piece of marble has become my greatest challenge.
